IIMA Interview – 21st March, 2022, Andheri East - Mumbai
Profile – 95/90.2/82; CAT – 99.93 %le
2.5 yrs work ex
I was 2nd last in my panel so it was a wait of close to 3 hours.
AWT Topic - A guy feels he is not doing anything wrong on social media and feels that government censorship on social media should not apply to him.
Ans. Wrote about a neutral side and said government should impose but also needs to take care of everyone not just selected people.
1. Tell me about yourself and don’t mention what’s in your form?
Ans. Mentioned about my education, extreme sports and city.
2. So you are from Kota, is Kota – training or education city? Diff b/w training and education?
Ans. Answered one being target driven and other being generic learning. I reversed the definition and later corrected myself on being pointed out.
3. What do you do in work ex? Some cross questions and said listen to my question and then answer – talked about coordination at work and grilled a lot here
Ans. Answered my prepared part and explained them the process. Was told to explain more so I went more granular and started explaining the details. They asked later what do I like in my work and and why am I good at it - explained the importance of coordination and I being good with people. He said you are not listening to my question properly, I stayed calm and answered his doubts.
4. Asked about chemical projects in 4th year? Mentioned environmental project and lot of questions on that with grilling?
Ans. My project was on waste water treatment and I highlighted the process used by us. He said it is distillation and I told him - it's sedimentation. The discussion then went on why not distillation and then I tried to convince him that distillation won't work here. I ended up saying I'll read on it more - he mentioned why do you need to read it now and why will you read? I just smiled and said I'll try to.
5. 2nd professor took over and asked Ganga can be cleaned with my solution and lot of cross questions on that?
Ans. I mentioned the kind of impurities our method could remove and the limitations. He asked can E Coli be removed too from Ganga - I told yes at first but later asked him for some time to think - corrected myself that it is not possible.
6. What are the components in paints?
Ans. I don’t know, I will have to go back and check.
7. AWT Discussion? What steps will you as a government official take to make sure hate speech is catered?
Ans. Started explaining and was then asked to define hate speech - I told anything which hurts anyone's sentiment (it can be as small as "XYZ" religion murdabad). Later on he asked me what else can government do? I mentioned government can just impose - companies need to adhere to the same. There are algorithms already used by big companies and those can be leveraged. We later went into data privacy issues and that's where a lot of stress testing happened - I repeatedly mentioned as an official I won't be sitting around and watching stuff happening, I need to get on ground and take action. The professor finally said – you are repeating the same thing again and again – we are not concluding anything – let’s leave it. This was the point I felt I'm out of this round and I was cursing myself like anything that how did this happen.
8. Frustrated face – asked me what are my hobbies?
Ans. I mentioned singing again as I did in my first question. He asked what's the difference b/w rock and hard rock. Told him - I don't know music technicalities. He then asked what is the diff b/w rock and pop? - told him again I don't know music technicalities and also mentioned that from my band experience whatever difference I'm aware of. He later asked what do I play - I said I just sing for now.
You may leave and take a candy while you leave.
Probably the most stressful interview I ever had, keeping my nerves was the key.
Verdict - Converted
(IIMA was always on my top priority while preparing for CAT and when the results came I literally cried and called my Mom saying - "Apka beta Ahmedabad jaa rha hai")
